Sheila's story: small break with big impact
Sheila has been caring for her husband for several years, following the onset of a long-term health condition. Living in a remote island community, she has adapted to the challenges that caring can bring, balancing her husband’s needs with everyday life.
More recently, her caring role expanded when her elderly mother became unwell and required additional support. Suddenly, Sheila found herself travelling between two homes, trying to ensure her husband and mum both received the care they needed. The physical and emotional demands became overwhelming, leaving her exhausted and worried about letting either of them down.
After speaking with her support worker, Sheila decided to apply for a Time to Live microgrant to fund a much-needed short break. Importantly, the grant also enabled support to be arranged for her mother, giving her peace of mind. The grant allowed Sheila and her husband to stay in a hotel in another part of the island. While the distance travelled was small, the impact was significant.
"With peace of mind that my mum was okay too, I was able to take some time with my husband and enjoy a mini break. We live remotely, so for us this meant so much. We didn't have to travel too far, but staying together in different surroundings meant that we could enjoy time as a couple rather than as a carer and cared-for."
For a few days, Sheila was able to step away from her caring responsibilities, rest and focus on her own wellbeing. The break gave her the opportunity to recharge both physically and emotionally. Her husband also benefitted greatly from the change of scenery and the chance to enjoy new surroundings.
Sheila was deeply appreciative of the support provided through the Time to Live microgrant, describing it as a lifeline that enabled her to rest, reconnect with her husband and return to her caring role with renewed energy and confidence.
