Shirley's story: strength in stillness

Shirley cares for both of her elderly parents in their 80s. This creates a demanding daily routine. Her father lives with dementia, and both parents rely on her for support with shopping, medication, cleaning, appointments and emotional reassurance. Even while managing her own health conditions, Shirley provides round‑the‑clock care - a commitment that had begun to take a significant toll on her physical and emotional wellbeing. She was experiencing severe body pain and symptoms of burnout brought on by ongoing stress.

Through the Time to Live microgrant, Shirley was able to access a block of craniosacral therapy sessions with a qualified practitioner. These gentle, hands‑on sessions aimed at easing tension, supporting the body’s natural rhythms and reducing pain, offered her a rare opportunity to step away from her caring role and focus entirely on herself.

The therapy provided not only physical relief but also a series of restorative moments she could look forward to each week. These small but meaningful breaks allowed Shirley to recharge, regain balance, and continue caring for her parents with renewed strength. The microgrant became much more than financial support it created space for healing, reflection, and much‑needed self‑care in the midst of an incredibly demanding caring role.

“The treatments have been incredibly beneficial for me not only physically, but mentally as well. They’ve helped me prioritise my own health and set healthier boundaries around my caring role."
