Stephen's story: teeing up to take a break
Stephen is a carer to his wife, who is living with Parkinson's. Caring is a central part of his daily life and because his wife often needs support, Stephen needs to remain close to home so that he is available whenever she needs him.
Before becoming a full-time carer, Stephen enjoyed getting out to play golf whenever he could. Golf provided him with an opportunity to relax, stay active, and focus on something for himself. However, due to his caring responsibilities, spending longer periods away from home is often difficult.
Looking to maintain his interest in golf while staying nearby to support his wife, Stephen explored ways he could practice and enjoy the game from home. With support, he applied for a Time to Live microgrant to purchase equipment that would allow him to continue developing his skills and provide valuable opportunities for relaxation and self-care.
The grant was used to purchase an at-home golf practice set, including a putting mat, practice golf balls, and a chipping net. The equipment enabled Stephen to practice different aspects of his game in his garden, giving him a positive activity he could enjoy while remaining close by should his wife need him.
"Being able to practice at home means I can still enjoy golf without worrying about being too far away. It gives me a chance to switch off for a while, focus on something I enjoy, and still be there if my wife needs me."
Having access to the equipment has given Stephen a meaningful way to take breaks throughout the day. It has helped him maintain a hobby that is important to him, while also supporting his physical and emotional wellbeing. The opportunity to spend even short periods practicing golf has helped reduce stress, improve his mood, and provide a sense of balance alongside his caring role.
Stephen's wife has also recognised the difference that having this outlet has made.
"It's lovely to see Stephen enjoying something for himself again. Knowing he can relax for a while close to home benefits both of us."
This grant has made a significant difference to Stephen's wellbeing. By enabling him to continue a hobby he loves in a way that fits around his caring responsibilities, it has given him valuable time to recharge, reduced feelings of isolation, and reminded him of the importance of looking after his own wellbeing while caring for someone else.

"Caring can be demanding and sometimes, it's easy to forget about your own interests. This has given me something positive to look forward to and encouraged me to take a little time for myself."
