Tarek’s story: a place to belong
Tarek is a Syrian refugee who lives with his wife and family. Following support from a dedicated worker, the family received assistance with benefit checks and were introduced to a range of support services, including the Time to Live fund.
Tarek is the primary carer for his wife, who lives with significant mobility difficulties and mental health challenges. Alongside supporting his wife, Tarek manages his own ongoing health concerns and regularly helps his son and daughter-in-law, who live nearby with their four children. Like many families who have been displaced from their home country, Tarek and his wife also carry the emotional burden of worrying about loved ones who remain in Syria.
Through attending a local Syrian support group, Tarek had the opportunity to speak openly about life at home and the challenges that caring can bring. During conversations with a support worker, he was encouraged to think about what would help improve his wellbeing and create opportunities for rest and relaxation.
As a result, Tarek applied for a Time to Live microgrant. The funding enabled him to purchase reclining garden chairs and a firepit, helping to transform a small outdoor space into a peaceful retreat for Tarek and his wife.
"We have a small area at the back of our house that we have made into a lovely garden with pots and plants. Having the chairs and the firepit is amazing for us because we can relax outside together. We love to cook and share meals together, and the firepit makes the area feel even more cosy."
Tarek shared that one of the things he misses most is sitting outdoors with friends and family: talking, sharing food, and enjoying each other's company. With the help of a Time to Live grant, he has been able to recreate some of that feeling in a place where he and his wife feel comfortable, relaxed and safe. The simple addition of reclining chairs and a firepit has created opportunities for connection, relaxation, and quality time together, helping both Tarek and his wife to focus on moments of enjoyment despite the challenges they face.
