Ted's story: taking a break to learn tricks
Ted is a young carer who helps support his family at home. His dad experiences addiction and mental health challenges, and while his mum is at work, Ted often helps look after both his dad and his younger brother around the demands of school.
Despite his caring responsibilities, Ted loves school and enjoys spending time with his friends whenever he can. One of his biggest passions is cycling. He had an old bike that he had outgrown, but with finances stretched at home, replacing it was simply not a priority.
While attending a young carers' homework club, Ted spoke about how much he missed being able to cycle with his friends. His Young Carer Worker encouraged him to apply for a Time to Live grant to help fund a new bike. With support completing the application, Ted was delighted to learn that his request had been successful.
“I was really lucky because a worker helped me apply for a fund, and I got a new BMX bike. It’s smashing! I love it because it’s my favourite colour - blue - and it even has stunt pegs on the wheels."
The impact of the BMX has been significant. Ted’s Young Carer Worker has noticed a real boost in his confidence and happiness since receiving the bike. Being able to ride alongside his friends has helped him feel included and part of the group.
When he is out cycling, Ted can put aside the worries and responsibilities he faces at home and simply enjoy being a child. The BMX has given him freedom, independence, and opportunities to spend time with his peers. Most importantly, it is something that belongs just to him, and he takes enormous pride in it.

"It’s great learning some tricks too. I use the bike after school and sometimes I cycle to school as well, which I really enjoy.”
