Tommy's story: gaming as a break

Tommy is a young carer, supporting his mum who lives with osteoarthritis and anxiety. He helps with cooking, cleaning and offering emotional support, taking on responsibilities that many adults would find challenging. While working with his Young Carers Support Worker, it became clear that Tommy really enjoyed gaming during group sessions. Seeing how much it helped him unwind, he was encouraged and supported to apply for a Time to Live microgrant.

Tommy was able to purchase a Nintendo Switch and games pack, giving him something that was truly his own that he could turn to for relaxation and enjoyment in the moments he found between caring tasks. Having this space to switch off, recharge, and simply be himself has made a positive and meaningful difference to his wellbeing.

"I love games that allow me to solve things, like Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express, Tetris 99, and Minecraft. Thank you so much! Just having something that is for me, and that I can play whenever I get the chance means a lot."
