Tyler’s story: scooter adventures

Tyler is a young carer and a member of the Gypsy/Traveller community. He takes on a significant amount of responsibility to help support his family. Despite his young age, he plays an important role in ensuring day-to-day life runs smoothly. He helps care for his sister, who has a physical disability and uses a wheelchair, and regularly looks out for his grandparents who live next door. His gran also lives with a heart condition, meaning Tyler is always ready to lend a helping hand when needed.

Like many young carers, Tyler often places the needs of others before his own. While he is proud to support his family and enjoys spending time with them, opportunities to focus on his own interests, independence and leisure activities can sometimes be limited.

With support from his Carer Support Worker, Tyler applied for a Time to Live microgrant. After discussing different options, he decided that an electric scooter would be the perfect choice. The funding helped financially as the purchase was only achievable with the microgrant.

The scooter has given Tyler far more than just a new way to get around. It has provided him with greater independence, opportunities to spend time outdoors with friends, and a chance to enjoy regular breaks from his caring responsibilities. Importantly, it has allowed him to experience the freedom and fun that every young person deserves.

While caring for his family remains incredibly important to him, having the chance to enjoy time for himself has had a positive impact on his wellbeing. The scooter has helped him balance his caring role with being a young person, creating opportunities for play, independence and making happy memories.
