Violet's story: building strength through pilates
Violet is an unpaid carer who provides support for both her father, who lives with a brain injury, and her partner who experiences challenges related to alcohol dependency and addiction. Balancing these caring responsibilities can be emotionally and physically demanding, and over time Violet found herself in need of additional support.
Recognising this, Violet reached out to her local carers' centre, where she received help with a range of support services, including counselling. Through these connections, she began working with a Carer Support Practitioner who helped her explore ways to improve her own wellbeing alongside her caring role. During their conversations, Violet spoke about the importance of keeping active. When time allowed, she enjoys walking and practicing yoga at home. However, she had always been interested in trying reformer pilates and was intrigued by the physical and mental health benefits it could offer. Despite this interest, she felt that taking time away from her caring responsibilities to attend classes would be difficult.
With encouragement and support from her Carer Support Practitioner, Violet began to consider how meaningful regular breaks could benefit both herself and those she cared for. Together they explored the opportunity to apply for a Time to Live microgrant. Violet's application was successful, enabling her to access a series of reformer pilates sessions. The funding also helped her purchase a pilates mat and some equipment that she could continue to use at home between classes.
"I was so excited to try reformer pilates, and it was brilliant. Although I was sore for a few days afterwards, it was completely worth it! I've learned so much about deep breathing, listening to my body, and finding ways to relax. These are things I can take with me when times are a bit more difficult at home."
The Time to Live fund enabled Violet to access regular activities that focus entirely on her own wellbeing. Having dedicated time away from her caring responsibilities allows her to recharge, while the pilates sessions improve her strength, flexibility, and confidence. Just as importantly, they provide practical techniques to help manage stress and support her emotional wellbeing.
Having a regular activity to look forward to encouraged Violet to prioritise self-care and create a healthier balance between caring for others and caring for herself. The breathing techniques and mindful movement she learned through Pilates became valuable tools that she could draw upon during more challenging periods.
"There are so many times as a carer when you feel you have to fight for what you need. Navigating different systems can be stressful and overwhelming. My experience with the Time to Live fund was the complete opposite. The process was straightforward, supportive and flexible."

"I felt listened to, and the break was designed around what mattered to me. It wasn't something chosen for me, it was something I genuinely wanted to do and knew I would enjoy. That made all the difference. Thank you so much."
