Wilfred's story: spirited strings
Wilfred is elderly and lives on a rural island with his wife, for whom he provides full-time care. His wife has a severe physical disability and significant mobility issues, and Wilfred has always preferred to manage her care himself, in a way that works best for them both.
Through regular visits from a care-at-home support worker, Wilfred built up a trusting friendship. During their conversations, he shared his love of playing the fiddle - a passion from earlier life. However, over time his instrument had become worn, and he found himself playing less.
The support worker encouraged Wilfred to consider what might bring him a little enjoyment and respite at home. Together, they explored the possibility of a Time to Live microgrant. Wilfred decided to apply for funding to have his fiddle restrung and to purchase some new sheet music. The impact of the grant was immediate and meaningful. With his fiddle restored, Wilfred rediscovered his passion for music.
With warmth and humour, Wilfred's wife joked about the increased practice sessions:
“I had to purchase some earplugs so that he can practice!”
The Time to Live grant has given Wilfred something just for himself, helping him reconnect with a lifelong passion while continuing in his caring role. It has brought renewed energy, joy, and a sense of balance to their lives, all within the comfort of their own home.
