William’s story: binoculars, a book, and a bird table

William lives in the countryside with his wife, Catherine. Catherine lives with multiple sclerosis, something they have learned to manage together over the years. They have come to recognise when times are more challenging and understand that her needs can change quite a lot. Like many couples, they take things one day at a time.

William said:

“We enjoy sitting together in our garden, as well as spending time indoors by the large picture window in our sitting room, where we can still look out over the garden. Being able to see nature, even on days when getting outside is harder, means a great deal to both of us.”

During a conversation with a support worker, William spoke about how much he enjoys birds and identifying them. Gardening and watching wildlife have always brought him a sense of calm.

“I was encouraged to apply for a Time to Live microgrant, and I was delighted to be successful. With the grant, I was able to buy binoculars and a large book about birds. I also bought a bird table and bird seed to get started. Being able to take some time together to enhance our experiences and have more to talk about, and something to nurture in our garden, was wonderful. I didn’t think of this as respite at first, but it really is. It’s my respite.”

What makes it even more special is that William can enjoy this time with Catherine. They sit together, talk about the birds they spot, watch nature change through the seasons, and simply be present.

“We have so much more to talk about now, and seeing Catherine smile makes me smile too. It gives us both a chance to relax and creates a haven for us, especially when times feel a bit more difficult.”

“Thank you for the microgrant. It was a small amount, but it has made a real difference. We can enjoy our garden again and again, and it has given me such a boost. Something so simple has brought so much value into our everyday lives.”
