Willow's story: drawing a brighter future

Willow is a young adult carer who provides support to both their grandparents, as well as their mum who experiences severe mental health challenges. Alongside their caring responsibilities, Willow is balancing their studies and planning for their future. Supporting family members can take up a significant amount of their time and energy, often leaving little opportunity to focus on their own interests and wellbeing.

As a creative person with ambitions of pursuing a career in graphic design, Willow wanted a way to take meaningful breaks from caring while also developing valuable skills that would support their university studies and future employment. Through a Time to Live microgrant, Willow was able to purchase a graphics drawing tablet and essential accessories. The equipment has provided them with a dedicated creative outlet, allowing them to spend time drawing, designing and developing their digital art skills.

"Having the drawing tablet gives me something that's just for me. When caring gets stressful, I can take a break, put my energy into creating artwork and switch off for a while. It helps me clear my mind and feel more relaxed."

The tablet has become much more than a hobby. It gives Willow the opportunity to take regular breaks from their caring responsibilities, helping to reduce stress and improve their wellbeing. The creative process allows them to focus on something positive, build confidence and express themselves in ways that support their mental health.

The equipment is also helping Willow work towards their educational and career goals. As they prepare for university and a future in graphic design, the tablet enables them to practice industry-relevant skills, create digital artwork, build a portfolio and explore different areas of design.

For Willow, the grant has been about more than purchasing equipment. It has created opportunities to relax, grow in confidence and take important steps towards a career in graphic design while continuing to care for the people who matter most.
