Yvonne's story: reigniting a passion for art
Yvonne is the primary carer for her two children, one of whom has autism and additional support needs. Alongside her caring role, she also works, balancing employment with the demands of parenting and providing intensive care and support for her family. The combined pressures of work, childcare and caring responsibilities leave her with very little time for herself and can be both physically and emotionally exhausting.
Through discussions with her Carer Support Worker, it became clear that Yvonne had very limited time, space and financial capacity to focus on her own wellbeing. Taking time away from her children was not something she found easy, and she preferred opportunities that would allow her to relax and recharge at home. The intensity of her caring responsibilities meant that a traditional short break, such as an overnight stay, was not a realistic option at this time and would likely have created additional stress rather than supporting her wellbeing.
Yvonne reflected that having dedicated time for herself would positively impact her mental health and, in turn, benefit her whole family. She spoke passionately about her love of art, explaining that creativity had once been an important hobby and emotional outlet for her before the increasing demands of everyday life made it difficult to pursue.
Through a Time to Live microgrant, Yvonne was able to purchase a range of watercolour painting supplies, including quality paper, brushes, paints and a palette. She also enrolled in online watercolour painting courses, giving her the opportunity to develop her skills and reconnect with a long-standing interest. The flexibility of the online sessions allowed her to take regular breaks at home, fitting creative time around her caring responsibilities while providing a valuable opportunity to relax, recharge and focus on something she enjoyed.
