Zoe's story: the power of hot stone massage
Zoe is a full‑time carer for her two children, both of whom require additional support. While she benefits from a supportive family network, she still has limited opportunities to step away from her caring role.
Following a discussion at her local carers' centre, Zoe learned about Time to Live, which could support her to take short breaks. With help from her family, she was able to arrange time to attend massage sessions. Instead of a cash grant, it was agreed that Zoe would receive vouchers, allowing her to access four massage sessions over the following months, at times that suited her schedule. This flexible approach made a big difference.
“There was no pressure to take a break on a certain date or make lots of arrangements for time away. With minimal planning, I was able to take these breaks when it suited me. A quick call to the therapist and I could book in and enjoy a really relaxing experience.”
These sessions had a clear and positive impact. They helped ease stress, improved Zoe’s physical wellbeing, and supported her overall mental health. Just as importantly, they helped her recognise the value of taking time for herself.
“These breaks made me realise that I need to look after myself and take regular time out, even if it’s only a couple of hours. I was able to truly relax, and afterwards the therapist made me a cuppa, which I really enjoyed as part of the experience. I’d never have thought to do this without the encouragement of the centre and the support from the vouchers.”
Like many carers, Zoe often puts her own needs last. However, this opportunity allowed her to pause and reconnect with herself.
“That hour of calm helped release tension I didn’t even realise I was carrying. I felt lighter and more able to cope afterwards.”
Through these small but meaningful breaks, Zoe has started to build space for her own wellbeing, helping her continue in her caring role with renewed energy and resilience.
