Zuri's story: music on the go

Zuri is a 13-year-old young carer, helping to support her mum, who lives with a physical disability, and her brother who has Asperger's syndrome. Alongside her caring responsibilities, Zuri has a real passion for music and storytelling, particularly the music from Disney films.

Through attending a young carers' club, Zuri spoke about her love of music and how it helped her relax when things felt difficult. With support from staff, she applied for a Time to Live grant to help her enjoy this interest at home and give her opportunities of time to herself.

The grant enabled Zuri to purchase a portable CD player and a selection of CDs, featuring some of her favourite music. Having a portable player meant she could listen to music at home and while accompanying her mum to medical appointments. During long waits, she could use music as a positive distraction, helping her to relax and take her mind off the challenges of her caring role.

"Having the CD player meant that I could follow my passion for music, while being at home or out and about. The choice was mine to make. I enjoy taking myself off and relaxing while listening to music."

The equipment has provided Zuri with a meaningful outlet and something she can look forward to each day. It has helped her feel more content at home, supported her emotional wellbeing, and given her opportunities to unwind and focus on something she enjoys. As a result, Zuri feels happier, more relaxed, and better able to manage the demands of her caring responsibilities.

This small grant has made a significant difference to Zuri's life. By supporting her passion for music, it has given her valuable time to herself, improved her wellbeing, and reminded her that her own interests and happiness are important too.
